ABOUT US

Antonio Colombo e Associati (Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology)
is a Team of Interventional Cardiologists and Clinical Cardiologists with additional experience  in Cardiovascular Imaging.
In 1986 the Group pioneered Interventional Cardiology in Italy, performing more than thirty thousand procedures since then, and  innovating the field with fundamental acquisitions.

The Interventional Cardiology Cardiac Cath. Lab. is directed by dr. Antonio Colombo for the past 30 years and is a leading center in Europe and in the world for treatment of coronary and structural heart disease.  Dr. Antonio Colombo has been recognized one of “The most influential scientific minds” by the agency Thomas Reuters in the year 2014.
Areas of expertise span from complex coronary interventions including treatment of coronary total occlusions, usage of bioresorbable scaffolds and treatment of multivessel coronary artery disease including left main stenosis. In the field of structural heart disease the Interventional Dr. Colombo and his Group have a very large experience in TAVI/TAVR, in MitraClip and in the treatment of a number of structural pathologies. TAVI are performed with new generation devices and our valve of choice is the Sapien 3, associated with a low incidence of paravalvular leaks and need for permanent pacemakers less than 8%.

Main conditions treated
  • Multivessel coronary artery disease
  • Chronic total occlusions
  • Left main coronary stenosis including complex distal bifurcations
  • Transcatheter implantation of aortic valves (TAVI/TAVR)
  • MitraClip for mitral and tricuspid regurgitation
  • Occlusion of Patent Foramen Ovale, Atrial and Ventricular septal defects; including usage of Noble-Stich (no foreign body to occlude PFO)
  • Occlusion of Left Atrial Appendix
  • Occlusion of paravalvular leaks
  • Carotid Interventions
  • Peripheral Interventions
  • Percutaneous treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurisms

Research
The research activities of the Interventional Cardiology at Columbus Hospital are and have been published in all major Cardiology Journals. The Cardiac Cath. Lab. participated and is actively involved in a number of First in Man studies leading to approval of different new devices in addition to taking part in trials under the auspices of the Federal and Drug Administration of USA.

Technology
State of the art equipment is available with particular emphasis to imaging. Intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and Near Infra Red Spectroscopy (NIRS). In addition the Interventional Cardiology department has all new generation cardiac stents including various bioresorbable scaffolds.

Staff
Antonio Colombo is the Director of Interventional Cardiology then there are four Senior Operators.

In the treatment of coronaries
Optimal stent implantation with lesion preparation using the most advanced techniques including as shockwave balloon for calcified lesions.
Procedural guidance with Intravascular Ultrasound / Optical Coherence Tomography/
Near- Infrared  Spectroscopy Use of latest generation stents including bioresorbable scaffolds
Opening of total occlusions with anterograde and retrograde approaches with dedicated operators
OUR STRENGTHS
In the pathology of peripheral vessels
Use of atherectomy
Use of drug-eluting stents
Use of drug-coated balloons

In structural and valvular pathologies
Use of last generation valves including Sapien 3
Use of filters for cerebral protection
Treatment of mitral and tricuspid insufficiency with MitraClip
Closure of Patent Foramen Oval using Noble-Stitch (no foreign body is left)

THE MEDICAL STAFF

The Group is expert in the diagnosis, medical and minimally invasive interventional treatment of cardiovascular diseases: coronary arteries, peripheral arterial vessels, valves and other cardiac structures.
Cardiac pathologies are multiple: from the most common ones such as: ischemic heart disease (partial or complete coronary occlusions) valvular disease (narrowing or insufficiency of the valves of the heart), congenital anomalies detected in adult age and cardiomyopathies.

DIAGNOSTIC and THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITIES

Columbus Hospital has state of the art non-invasive tools.

Interventional procedures are guided with catheter technologies and echo imaging.  Catheters travel blood vessels, reach area of interest under the X- ray guidance and with injection of a contrast agent.

Dedicated approaches are utilized to minimize use of contrast in patients with renal insufficiency

Coronary angiography and Interventions are mainly performed through the radial artery (at wrist level) with no need of bed rest. If requested same day discharge can be offered.

Peripheral arteries can be investigated in a similar way.

Diagnostic and Interventional procedures are performed on the abdominal aorta (treatment of aneurysms) on arteries of the lower and upper limbs, on renal arteries, on carotid, vertebral and subclavian vessels.

CORONARY AND VASCULAR INTERVENTION
STRUCTURAL INTERVENTION
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES
After the diagnosis, various therapeutic solutions will be proposed as listed below

  • Cerebral filter protection systems during TAVI: Sentinel device
  • TAVI valves such as Sapien 3 or New Generation Self-Expanding Valves
  • Sapien 3 implant on mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary valves when technically possible inside surgical annulus or surgical valves
  • Use of shockwave system for both coronary and peripheral calcified lesions
  • When appropriate, use second-generation fully resorbable scaffolds
  • Sirolimus coated balloons for coronary and peripheral vessels
  • ELUVIA self-expanding stent for superficial femoral artery

Cardiac Interventions in Columbus Hospital (Dr. Antonio Colombo, TEAM)

Columbus Hospital is active for Cardiac Interventions (coronary and structural) during COVID-19 epidemics.

Patients will be tested for COVID-19 at the time of admission. The results of the oral swab will be available in 48 hours. In the meantime, the patient will stay in a nearby hotel. Our office will provide practical information regarding this issue.

If the patient has a negative swab for SARS-COV2 (COVID-19) performed not later than 3 days prior to arrival, hospital admission can take place immediately.
